Isolation and Identification of Candida Species in Superficial Fungal Diseases

Abstract
Authors performed isolation and identification of Candida species in patients with superficial fungal diseases who showed positive finding in direct KOH smear and Candida grew in Sabouraud¢¥s glucose agar media from July, 1988 to June, 1989 in the Department of Dermatology, College of Medicine, Chung Ang University, Seoul, Korea.
Among 101 patients, 101 strains of Candida species were isolated and identified by culture in corn meal-Tween 80 media, and sugar assimilation and fermentation tests using API 20C AUX strip system.
The results were as follows:
1) The ratio of male to female was 1.46:1 (60:41).
2) Age distribution showed high incidence in the third (20.8%) and fifth (14.8%) decades.
3) Among 101 patients who showed growth of Candida species in Sabouraud¢¥s glucose agar media, Tinea (T.) pedis was the most common (25.7%) clinically. The second most frequent disease was Candidiasis (21.8%), followed by T. cruris (18.8%), Onychomycosis (14.9%), T. manus (9.9%), and T. corporis (8.9%).
4) Among 101 Candida species Candida (C.) albicans (65.3%), C. tropicalis (11.9%), C. krusei (6.9%), C. stellatoidea (2.0%), C. gu lliermondi (1.0%) and Crvptococcus (12.9%) were identified.
5) Clinical diagnosis of 66 patients, who revealed identification of C. albicans, were Candidiasis (21 patients), T. pedis (19), T. cruris (13), Onychomycosis (6), T. corporis (4), and T. manus (3) in order of frequency respectively.
